Twickenham chance is a great way for Devonport Services players to cap a memorable season, says Bentham

NEXT Sunday, Devon’s men’s and women’s teams will be running out at Twickenham in County Championship finals.

The men will take on North Midlands and the women will play Cumbria in their respective Division Three finals.

Devon’s men’s team have relied heavily on Devonport Services’ successful Regional One South West title-winning side.

Rikki Bentham, Aiden Taylor, Andy Pond, Mike Rickard, James Hocking, Matt Gregory, Liam Jarvis, Mark Friend, Richard West, Shaun Crawford and Dylan Daley have all featured in one or more of Devon’s three games.

Services’ player-coach Bentham, who has started all three matches, admits a trip to Twickenham just caps a memorable season for the Devonport lads, which has not only seen the club win promotion to the National Leagues but also lift the Devon Senior Cup.

“We keep saying it just keeps getting better and better,” said Bentham. “I don’t think we will ever top this season.

“The only thing left now is to go to Twickenham and win – that’s the plan.”

He added: “I have played there before for Cornwall when I was younger, so I will be going back, but for a lot of lads it will be their first time and it is a special place and it’s a great way to finish the season.”

Devon booked their spot by convincingly beating Hertfordshire 43-10 at Brixham last Saturday in the semi-finals. That followed on from a 31-19 win at Berkshire in their second group match and a 68-43 home victory over Dorset & Wiltshire in the opening game at Ivybridge.

Bentham felt last week’s performance was the best of their campaign.

“I don’t think we’d had a proper performance before,” he said. “We attacked well in the first game, defended okay in the second game, and so we were going out for a complete performance in the third game and I think we got that. We defended well and we attacked from everywhere.”

Bentham decided to switch from Cornwall to Devon this season and he says he has enjoyed playing for the Green and Whites.

“It was a big decision, but I’ve enjoyed it and I don’t regret anything,” he said. “There’s a great bunch of lads here and great coaches and we’ve had a hell of season.”

He added: “There’s obviously a lot of Services lads in the squad, but there’s other lads from other clubs and what is nice is that we have all bonded very quickly. We have spent a season beating each other up but now we get to play with each other, which is great.”
