GALLERY: Success for Ivybridge, Tavistock and Sharks at Devon colts finals

IVYBRIDGE, Tavistock and Albion Sharks all picked up trophies at the Devon colts cup finals, which were held at Kingsbridge on Sunday.

Ivybridge showed their strength to claim the main cup with a convincingly 42-19 victory over Barnstaple.

The first half was quite close, but the Bridgers totally pulled away in the second period to end their season as county champions.

They went 14-0 up after 20 minutes with a try out wide by winger Harry Cane and then one under the posts by centre Adam Lilley. Both were converted by fly-half Adam Sams.

Barnstaple cut the gap with a try on 26 minutes, but almost immediately Ivybridge went up the other end and scored a third try through hooker Jed Soper.

Their north Devon opponents pulled one back just before half-time to leave the score at the break 19-14 to the South Hams club.

The Bridgers started the second half well and Sams kicked two penalties to put his side 25-14 ahead.

Those successful kicks were quickly followed by a second try of the afternoon by Lilley.

Late on Ivybridge were awarded a penalty try before Ed Slater did well to touch down in the right corner.

Barnstaple did score a consolation catch-and-drive try with the last play of the game, but it did nothing to overshadow Ivybridge’s impressive victory.

Meanwhile, Tavistock produced a remarkable comeback to claim a last-gasp 21-20 victory over Torquay Athletic in the plate final.

Torquay had led 20-3 at half-time, with Brandon Allen kicking Tavistock’s only first half points, but momentum in the game just changed halfway through the second period and a penalty by Joe Wheeldon with the last play won the match for Tavistock.

Once Tavistock got one try back, Torquay’s discipline started to go and once the match became a one score contest the Tics picked four yellow cards in a row.

Vaughan Glover, Liam Watts and Dan Garside scored second half tries for Tavistock before Wheeldon’s last-gasp kick that led to scenes of joy from the Moorlanders.

Albion Sharks, a team made up of players from DHSOB Sharks and OPMs, won the bowl final in another controversial final.

They drew 17-17 with South Molton, who finished strongly with two late tries. South Molton kicked the ball out thinking there would be extra-time of a rugby version of a penalty shoot-out. The referee knew there could be no extra-time at age group level, but even he was not sure how the winners would be decided. Both teams had scored three tries, but, after the rules were checked, the Sharks were awarded the win courtesy of scoring first.

The team, who are all still under-17s, celebrated in style once they were told they had won, but credit had to go to South Molton, who acceptable the decision remarkably well and were an good example to all the teams there.

Tom Mervyn, Ellis Foale and Eli Hingston scored the Sharks’ cup final tries.
