Region’s athletes impress at South West T&F Championships, while Jones and Timson claim victories at Summer 5

ATHLETES from the region impressed at the South West Track & Field Championships at Exeter on Sunday.

The event incorporated the South West Inter-Counties Championships and competitors from Armada clubs particularly impressed in the middle distance events.

In the 800m, Tavistock’s Freddie Whybrow went under the two minute barrier for the first time to win the under-16 boys’ event for Devon. He clocked 1:59.97.

City of Plymouth’s Elise Goodspeed, also representing Devon, comfortably won the corresponding under-16 girls’ final over two laps in 2:15.12, while club colleague Ava Buxton, running for Cornwall, triumphed in the under-14 girls’ 800m in a PB time of 2:26.56.

City of Plymouth’s Lucas Sweeney, wearing a Cornwall vest, took victory in the under-14 boys’ 1,500m in a time of 4:31.33, while Tavistock and Devon’s Eldon Young came second in the under-16 boys’ metric mile in a PB time of 4:14.52.

There was a gold medal for Tavistock and Devon’s Luke Scott-Tucker in the under-16 boys’ 3,000m with a PB of 9:07.40. Cornwall’s Benjamin Marriott took bronze in that race in 9:16.88, which was also a new best.

In the sprint events there was a 100m and 200m double for Tavistock’s Joe Wake in the under-18 boys’ category. He clocked 11.36 seconds to win the 100m and 22.99 seconds for victory in the 200m.

City of Plymouth’s Josh Bloxham, representing Cornwall, took the under-18 400m gold in 51.50 seconds, while Nicolas Maczugowski was second in the senior men’s 400m in 50.64 seconds.

City of Plymouth’s Rory Summers, better know for his one-lap running, took gold in the under-20 200m in 22.83 seconds. He also took a bronze in the 100m with a time of 11.58 seconds.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Isabella Trowell, competing for Devon, impressed in the under-18 girls’ hurdles events. She won gold in the 100m event in 15.38 seconds and came second in the 400m final in 1:08.49. Robyn Summers took bronze in the under-18 400m hurdles behind Trowell in 1:11.52.

Tavistock student Oscar Mytton won bronze medals in both the under-18 boys’ 400m and 110m hurdles events in 59.63 seconds and 15.71 seconds, respectively.

Tavistock and Devon’s Josh Tyler finished with two golds and a silver in the men’s throwing events.

He won his favourite shot final in 15.07m and also won the hammer competition with 38.23m and took silver in the discus with 38.36m.

Club colleague Phoebe Milburn eased to victory in the under-20 women’s hammer with a throw of 46.29m, while George Brown picked up a bronze medal in the under-18 boys’ hammer with 46.39m and fellow Tavistock thrower Mabel Maguire won the silver in the under-16 girls’ javelin with 28.94m.

Away from the track, Plymouth Harriers hosted their Summer 5 race in Central Park on Saturday evening.

The event saw Plymstock Road Runners’ Brett Jones (M40) took overall victory in a time of 29.12 minutes.

Second place went to Ben Austin in 30.12 minutes, with Storm Plymouth’s Daniel Westlake third in 30.47 minutes, Tavistock AC’s Iain Gillam fourth in 31.09 and Plymstock’s M60 athlete Graham Bale taking fifth place just ahead of Pete Waumsley, who took the first M50 prize.

The women’s race was won by City of Plymouth’s Phoebe Timson in 34.47 minutes.

She finished two minutes ahead of the next woman who was Tavistock AC’s Elizabeth Gillam.

Third overall and first F50 was Tamar Trotters’ Julie Gillbard, with Plymouth Musketeers’ Kelly Brumhead was four and first F40 in 39.22 minutes, with Lauren Fairbairn fifth in 39.27 minutes.

More than 100 runners took part in the event.
