Tavistock College pupil Stead took second in the girls’ hammer competition at the Mary Peters Track in Northern Ireland after nearly missing the competition.
The Tavistock AC teenager got stuck in traffic on the M5 and missed the team’s flight out of Birmingham.
But, determined to represent her country, Stead managed to get a train ticket to Watford and then a last-minute flight out of Luton on Friday.
She arrived in Belfast at midnight, but despite the hectic and stressful travel, Stead threw an impressive 54.47m to take silver and finish as the top England thrower. She was only beaten by Ireland’s Lelia Cummins, who took gold with 55.17m.
Three-times English Schools’ champion Fasuba took silver in a stacked girls’ 200m.
In a tight race, which was run into a head wind, the Coombe Dean pupil, the UK’s leading under-16 runner, was just edged out for gold by Wales’ under-18 sprinter Aliyah Afolabi, who won in 23.96 seconds.
City of Plymouth AC’s Fasuba also won a silver medal in the 4x100m relay event for England.
