Plymouth judo star Gregory delighted to be selected to represent Team England at this summer’s Commonwealth Games

PLYMOUTH’S Max Gregory is setting his sights high after earning selection for the Team England judo squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old former Plymstock School pupil has been named in a 14-strong team for the Glasgow event, which takes place between July 23 and August 2.

Gregory, who won a silver medal at the Tallinn European Open last year, missed out on the last Commonwealth Games due to injury so he is overjoyed to be selected this time.

“I am very happy to get the selection after missing the last one and very excited for the whole event,” said Gregory, who will compete in the -100kg category.

“My ambitions are to win. Nobody wants to turn up just for the T-shirt.”

The Drake Judo Club member added: “I remember watching Glasgow 2014 when I was younger.

“This is more so a memory that my mum keeps reminding me of, but she says that I was watching it on TV and I was like, ‘oh, I’m going to go to the Commonwealth Games one day’ and she holds me to that now.”

Gregory was keen to pay tribute to his family following his selection.

He said: “A massive thank you to all my friends and family for their support throughout the journey. None of this would have been possible without you.”
