WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Marine Academy face waiting game after draw with Torquay, but Saltash United edge closer to title

MARINE Academy Plymouth’s hopes of winning the South West Women’s Premier Division title suffered a blow on Sunday as they were held to a 0-0 draw by title-rivals Torquay United in their final match of the season.

Marine Academy went into the fixture knowing that a win would guarantee them the crown.

But second-placed Torquay knew a win or a draw would put the title’s destination in their own hands with two games left to play.

Both sides knew a defeat would be totally costly and so chances were few and far between.

Torquay did everything they could to frustrate Marine Academy and celebrated the draw as if they had won.

However, they still have to win their final two matches to overtake Marine, who are five points clear at the top.

Torquay will have to beat third-placed Sherborne Town away and Pucklechurch Sports at home.

Saltash United now need just one point from their remaining two games to win the South West Division One South title after they beat title rivals Plympton 4-0 at Bull Point on Sunday.

The sides are now level on points at the top, with Plympton just ahead on goal difference, but they have now completed all their games, whereas Saltash still have home matches against Sticker and Helston to play.

The Ashes scored two goals in each half on Sunday.

Katie Hengle opened the scoring from a corner before Nicola Champion doubled their lead before the break.

After the interval Evelyn Bray and Beth Prouse added further goals.

In the Devon Women’s League South & West Division, Horrabridge Rangers are looking certain to win the title after they beat Lakeside Athletic 6-0 at home. Katie Cox, Toni Allen, Vicky Jasper and Leah Parnell-Moss were among their scorers.

Elm United stay in second after they beat Signal Box 8-6 in a goal-fest in sunny weather. Ellie Pearce hit five for Signal Box, but it was not enough for them to win.

SB Oak Villa stay in third place after they beat Paignton 3-0 away.

In the Cornwall Women’s League, Saltash Borough were beaten 4-1 at home by St Agnes. Sophie Perrin scored Borough’s only goal.
