GALLERY: Reid, Lamerton and Jackman claim victories at second Westward Cross Country League

CITY of Plymouth athletes Holly Reid, Isaac Lamerton and Jazz Jackman all claimed victories at the second Westward Cross Country League meeting at a windy Newquay on Sunday.

The meeting also incorporated the Cornwall County AA Championships and Reid and Jackman also took those titles, while there were also county medals for City of Plymouth team-mates Molly Gilbey, Abbie Chapman, Lucas Sweeney and Tamar Trotters’ Jacob Landers.

Reid produced an impressive performance to win the under-17 girls’ race, which was run alongside the U17 boys and senior women. She was actually seventh female overall and won her age group by nearly a minute. Second under-17 girl was her club colleague and fellow Cornish athlete Molly Gilbey. There were also top 10 league finishes in that age category for East Cornwall’s Georgie Gilbert, City of Plymouth’s Phoebe Timson, Immogen Rickard and Bella May and Tavistock’s Hannah Walker.

Lamerton claimed victory in the under-15 boys’ race, having finished third in the opening meeting at Newnham Park. He seemed to revel in the windy conditions on Sunday and beat North Devon’s Christopher Oliveria, who had come second at Newnham, by 14 seconds. Tavistock’s Caleb Gifford-Groves was fifth in the same race, with team-mate Noah Reid seventh.

Plymouth’s Jackman claimed her second successive league victory in the under-11 girls’ race. She held off Cornwall AC’s Emily Harvey in the long home straight to triumph by four seconds. Her Plymouth club colleague Jess Gardiner was third, while fellow team-mates Margot Goodspeed and Tilly Day were fifth and eighth respectively.

In the under-11 boys’ race, City of Plymouth’s Finley Eales claimed second place, with team-mate and Bishop Cornish pupil Luke Sweeney fourth overall and second in the Cornwall Championships event. Tavistock’s Tristan Bigham was fifth and there was also a top 10 finish for Plymouth’s Sebastian Traves.

There were top three placings for Tavistock’s Zoe Bingham and Lamorna Cox in the under-13 girls’ race.  Bignham took second behind Cornwall AC’s Ava Sutton, with Cox third. City of Plymouth’s Elsie Goodspeed was sixth.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Matthew Gilvear enjoyed a great battle in the home straight with Newquay’s Blake Williams for the second and third places in the under-17 boys’ race. Both finished in the same time, but Gilvear was just edged out on the line by Blake. Cornwall AC’s Luke Mills won the race. Gilvear had a busy weekend as the day before he had represented his school at the South West Schools’ Cup, where he finished fourth in the senior boys’ race.

Also in the under-17 event at Newquay, City of Plymouth’s Thomas Jones was eighth and Erme Valley’s Charlie Milward, who had also run the day before, was 11^th.

In the under-13 boys’ race, City of Plymouth’s Daniel Salmon took third place, while East Cornwall Harriers’ Eldon Young and Plymouth’s Freddie Blight were also in the top 10.

Plymouth’s Abbie Chapman secured the Cornwall County AA silver medal in the under-15 girls’ race, where she was fifth overall, just one place ahead of team-mate Madeline Jones.

There was a strong showing from Armada athletes in the senior women’s race. City of Plymouth’s Annie Arnold was third overall behind Newquay RR’s Julia Davis and Exeter University’s Ffion Higginson. Tavistock’s Nikki Kelly was fourth, with team-mate Jo Meek fifth and first F45. Erme Valley Harriers’ Faith Taylor-Tippett was seventh and Plymouth’s Hannah Blair eighth.

The men’s senior race was highly-competitive and was won by Cornwall AC’s Callum Jones. City of Plymouth’s Zechariah Cohen finished strongly to take sixth place, with Tamar Trotters Jacob Landers 10^th overall and third in the Cornwall County Championships. Tavistock’s Jordan Andrews came just one place behind Landers, with Plymouth Harriers’ Johnny Gilby 14^th overall and second M40. Tavistock’s Martin Exley-Deane was first M60.

Meanwhile, Erme Valley Harriers’ Cleo Perry impressed for England at the British & Irish Masters International in Dublin.

Perry finished fourth in the W50 category. She was England top finisher and was only beaten by Ireland’s Annette Kealy, Northern Ireland’s Elison Crawford and Ireland’s Breda Gaffney.

Perry did lead the England team to second place in their category behind host country Ireland.
