The Cornwall Cross Country Championships were run in conjunction with the second Westward Cross Country League.
Jed Hutchings was a dominant winner in both competitions in the under-15 boys’ category.
He finished 37 seconds ahead of Tavistock’s Fynn Baker, who took a good second place ahead of North Devon’s Chris Oliveria, while Hutchings was a full minute ahead of the next Cornwall athlete.
Barnaby Hutchings also won both events in the under-13 boys’ category. He finished 23 seconds ahead of Bodmin Dragons’ Lewis Trubridge in second.
Armada athletes did dominant the top 10 of under-15 girls’ race with Erme Valley Harriers’ Bella May sixth, City of Plymouth’s Abbie Chapman seventh, Tavistock Run Project’s Holly Cole eighth and Plymouth’s Madeleine Jones ninth.
There was some controversy in the senior men’s race after Cornish athlete Sam Goodchild was apparently sent the wrong way.
He was reinstated for the Cornwall Championships, but the Westward League senior men’s winner was Exeter University’s Hugo Hewitt, with Plymouth Harriers’ Johnny Gilby having a good run in fourth place. Gilby was also first over-40.
Tavistock Run Project’s Jordan Andrews finished ninth, just ahead of Jacob Harrison, Tamar Trotters’ Jacob Landers, team-mate Jim Cole and Ben Harrison. Landers was fourth senior man in the Cornwall championship.
The senior women’s race was also strong in Cornwall, with Taunton’s Elle Twentyman comfortably winning ahead of Cornwall winner Megan Davis of Newquay Road Runners.
Tamar Trotters’ Bex Ezra, who had finished as first senior woman in the opening Westward League, was eighth overall in Newquay and fourth Cornish athlete. Tavistock’s Jo Meek was 11th and first over-40.
The under-17 girls also ran with the senior women and City of Plymouth’s Martha Wilson came fifth in that age category.
Another Erme Valley athlete Isabella Trowell ran well in the under-13 age group. She finished fourth overall, with Tavistock athletes Claudia Jones and Lamorna Cox also coming in the top 10.
There was a top six finish for Tavistock’s Freddie Whybrow in the under-11 boys’ race.
The third Westward Cross Country League meeting will take place on December 5 at Exeter. That will also incorporate the Devon County Cross Country Championships.
