CITY of Plymouth’s Matthew Sumner opened his outdoor season at the Great West Open & Ken Trickey Memorial Meet at Exeter.
Sumner, runner-up in the 400m hurdles at last year’s English Championships, took victory in the 400m flat at Exeter Arena.
He clocked 51.39 seconds to edge out Taunton’s Elliott Scott by half-a-second.
Plymouth’s European Masters’ medallist Neal Edwards won the 400m hurdles in 60.56 seconds.
In the women’s 400m hurdles, team-mate Molly Mather clocked 65.94 to finish second overall and first under-20.
The City of Plymouth athlete won the 80m hurdles in 11.69 seconds and the 200m in 26.74 seconds. She was also second in the shot putt with a throw of 10.16m.
Tavistock’s under-15 athlete Ben Pitts triumphed in the 100m in 12.42 seconds and came second in the 200m (24.74 seconds) and long jump (5.45m).
Team-mate Emma Ryder won the women’s 800m in 2:20.26.
City of Plymouth’s Leo Shipley ran a sub 12-second 100m to win the under-17 boys’ race.
In the girls’ 200m, Plymouth’s Mali Heard won the under-13 race in 28.60, while team-mate Mia Mytton took victory in the under-15 event in 28.50 seconds.
There were some good field performance at Exeter from the region’s athletes.
City of Plymouth’s Nabia Evans-Shield won the under-13 discus and shot. She threw an impressive 28.68m in the discus and 7.10m in the shot.
Club colleage Angus Harris won the under-13 boys’ javelin with 25.58m, while Tavistock’s Charlie Shipton triumphed in the under-20 hammer with 30.70m.
Erme Valley Harriers’ Bronwyn Harris won the under-15 girls’ discus by more than six metres. She threw 20.89m. Harris also came second in the high jump with a leap of 1.50m and second in the shot (8.31m). In the high jump her team-mate Ella Isaias was third with 1.45m.
Tavistock’s Nicolas Maczugowski took victory in the under-13 boys’ high jump with 1.30m.
