Harris wins hurdles bronze medal at English Schools’ Track & Field Champs

PLYMOUTH Studio School’s Sammie Harris won a bronze medal at the English Schools’ Track & Field Championships in Birmingham on Saturday afternoon.

Harris took third in the intermediate girls’ 80m hurdles with a personal best time of 11.17 seconds, even without using any starting blocks.

In the same final, her City of Plymouth team-mate and fellow multi-eventer Emily Bee, of Plymouth High School for Girls, came fifth in 11.35 seconds, which was also a PB.

Both athletes had won their heats the day before but in the final they found Millfield  School’s Marcia Sey in inspired form. She clocked 11.07 to take victory.

Second was Leicestershire’s Victoria Johnson, who finished just 0.02 of a second ahead of Harris in 11.15.

It did look initially like Bee had claimed fourth, but Buckinghamshire’s Zoe Pollock was given that place 0.01 of a second ahead of Bee.

Ivybridge Community College pupil and Tavistock athlete Edward Fileman finished sixth in the junior boys’ hammer with a throw of 46.33m, which was just short of his PB.

His Tavistock club team-mate Oliver Smart, a pupil at Mount Kelly College, did set a new lifetime best in Birmingham in the junior boys’ 1,500m. He clocked 4:17.12 in the heats but it was not enough for him to reach the final.

Another Tavistock athlete, Jade Kinsey produced a good performance in the heats of the senior girls’ 400m. She clocked 58.30 seconds but also missed out on a final spot, as did Plymouth High School for Girls’ Jenny Milburn in the intermediate girls’ 800. She clocked 2:21.12 in the heats.

City of Plymouth athlete and Ivybridge Community College pupil Mia O’Daly finished 14^th in the intermediate girls’ discus with 31.49m.
