Battershill smashes his PB at Hungarian World Athletics Tour event

ERME Valley Harriers athlete Will Battershill smashed his 3,000m steeplechase personal best as he won his first World Athletics Continental Tour medal in Hungary at the weekend.

Battershill finished second in the World Tour Bronze Hungarian GP Series event in Budapest.

He clocked a quick 8:27.59 minutes, which was four seconds quicker than he had ever run before and puts him in the UK’s all-time top 30 for the event.

He is one of just four British athletes this year to have gone under 8:30.

The BUCS champion and Great Britain international is set to end his track season this weekend when he runs a 2,000m steeplechase race at the Gold Tour event in Zagreb, Croatia.

Meanwhile, some of the region’s talented youngsters competed at the final South West League meeting of the season at Exeter on Sunday.

City of Plymouth sprinter Jacob Lamboll showed his versatility by winning the under-20 100m, 200m and taking second in the 800m. He clocked 11.67 seconds for the 100m, 23.00 seconds for the 200m and 2:09.32 for the 800m. Lamboll is better known for his 400m running – an event he came fifth in at the English Schools’ Championships in 48.61 seconds.

Tavistock’s under-15 athlete Katelyn Milburn claimed two new personal bests at Exeter. She won the under-15 triple jump with a new best of 9.89m, which ranks her in the UK’s top 20. She also threw a PB of 8.89m to finish second in shot.

Club colleague Charlotte Doney also set a PB in the same under-15 triple jump competition of 9.34m, while she came second in the discus with 22.24m.

Tavistock’s under-17 hammer thrower Phoebe Milburn, fresh from winning a bronze medal at the School Games National Finals with a PB of 50.75m, opted to compete in the senior women’s hammer event at Exeter and won the 4kg competition with a PB throw of 42.20m.

Club team-mate Louisa Hess triumphed in the under-17 3kg event with 42.50m, while fellow Tavistock thrower Ella Patterson took second with a PB of 40.10m. Patterson also took second in the discus with 22.79m.

Another Tavistock athlete, Annabelle Hess, won the women’s 200m, while Erme Valley’s under-15 runner Luke Hayes set a new 800m of 2:18.72 to take third, while City of Plymouth’s under-17 athlete Molly Shorey was also third in her 800m race in 2:24.74.
