Plymouth student Bryson wins BUCS pentathlon title in Oxford

UNIVERSITY of Plymouth’s Kerenza Bryson won the women’s modern pentathlon title at the BUCS Championships in Oxford at the weekend.

The Great Britain international, who recently reached the women’s final at the opening World Cup event in Cairo, comfortably claimed victory ahead of Aberdeen’s Eilidh Prise and Bath’s Olivia Green at the Iffley Sports Centre.

Medical student Bryson won 23 of her 26 fencing bouts, she clocked 2:24.82 for the swim, enjoyed an impressive ride where she picked up 300 points and produced the fastest time in the combined run-shoot with 13:19.00.

Cambridge’s Henry Choong won the men’s event, ahead of Bath’s Bradley Sutton.

Meanwhile, Plymouth College pentathlete Annabel Denton has been selected to represent Great Britain at the first youth international of 2019 – the European Cup in Leira, Portugal, which will take place on the weekend of April 13-14.

Denton, 15, who competed at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aries last year has been named in the under-19 team, despite still being young enough to compete in the under-17 event. She is currently ranked third in the youth pentathlon world rankings.

The competition forms part of a busy schedule in the Pentathlon GB calendar with National Youth Ranking Competition 3 (under-19) taking place on Sunday, March 24 and the British Modern Tetrathlon Championships, which also doubles up as a youth ranking competition, being held on Sunday, April 28.
