Long claims victory in final South West Cyclo Cross Series race

RICHARD LONG ended the South West Cyclo Cross Series on a high with victory at the final round at the Torbay Velo Park.

Long finished 35 seconds ahead of Hamish Fletcher-Cooney, who took second spot. Third place overall was Royal Navy’s Oliver Yates, who was first veteran. Tavistock Wheelers’ Philip Collings was fourth overall and third senior.

The women’s race at the Paignton venue was won by Bridport’s Ross Catriona, who finished ahead of the Mid-Devon pair of Catherine Kilburn and Jackie Shute and Plymouth Corinthians’ Tracey Corcoran.

There was plenty of success in the junior age groups again for Tavistock Wheelers.

Orla White won the under-10 girls’ race, while team-mate Orla Maguire was second in the under-14 event behind War Vena’s Meribel Hudson.

Fellow Tavistock rider James Pearcy was third in the under-16 boys’ competition, which was won by Samuel Medlyn. Taw Velo’s Emma Spriggs won the under-16 girls’ race.

There was also a third place finish for Wheelers’ Keir Francis in the under-12 boys’ event. Taw’s Georgia Mahoney was first girl in that age group.

Mid-Devon’s Matthew Holmes was first under-10 boy. Tavistock’s Mabel Maguire came third in the under-eight girls’ race, which was won by Lauren Fox. George Stacey won the boys’ under-eight event, with Pilgrim Flyers’ James Allen second and Tavistock Wheelers’ Alexander Pearcy third.
