RIDERS from the area impressed at the South West Regional Cyclo-Cross Championships held at Redruth on Sunday.

Pilgrim Flyers’ Rosie Andrews took the under-16 girls’ title, finishing 52 seconds ahead of Tavistock Wheelers’ Connie McLaughlin, who took second in wet and muddy conditions in Cornwall.

Tavistock’s Emma Luckham was first under-14 girl, while team-mate Orla White was first under-10 girl.

Tavistock enjoyed plenty of success on the day, particularly in the junior age groups, with Keir Francis taking second in the under-12 category, James Pearcy coming third in the under-16 race and Alex Pearcy third in the under-eight event.

Probably the top race of the day was the junior men’s competition that saw Olympic Youth Games medal winner Harry Birchill come up against his Mid-Devon team-mate Tristan Davies and Pilgrim Flyers’ Oliver Allen.

Birchill showed his class to win by nearly three minutes, with Davies taking second place ahead of Allen in third.

The senior men’s race was won by Cornish home favourite Steve Lampier, but there was a good performance from Rockin’ Bikes’ Richard Long to take second place, just ahead of Tavistock Wheelers’ Philip Collings.

The women’s race was also a good one, with Mid-Devon veteran Catherine Kilburn producing an impressive display to take victory ahead of Pilgrim Flyers’ Helen Barron, Mid-Devon’s Jackie Shute and Plymouth Corinthians’ Tracey Corcoran.

Meanwhile, cycling fans in the Plymouth area have suffered another blow with news that the Mount Edgcumbe round of the South West Cyclo Cross League, which should have been held on December 16, has now been cancelled.

It follows the cancellation of the only other meeting in the Plymouth area – at Down Thomas – at the start of last month.
