EMILY BEE and Oliver Smart both broke track championship records on their way to claiming gold medals at the Devon County Athletic Championships at Exeter Arena.

There were also field records for Tavistock’s Ben Pitts and Nicolas Maczugowski.

Plymouth’s Great Britain international hurdler David King, who competed in April’s Commonwealth Games, was also close to breaking a county mark on a rare outing over 200m.

King will run the 110m hurdles in Friday night’s Manchester CityGames, where he will take on world indoor champion Andy Pozzi and Olympic Aries Merritt.

But the City of Plymouth athlete showed some decent flat speed to clock 22.01 seconds to take a comfortable victory in the 200m in Exeter. That was just two tenths of a second off the championship record.

Club colleague Bee did take a record on her way to three county gold medals in the under-17 age group.

The English indoor pentathlon champion won the 80m hurdles, 200m and high jump.

She clocked 11.52 seconds for the hurdles, which was a new meet record, ran 26.01 seconds for the 200m and leaped 1.60m in the high jump.

Smart’s new championship record came in the under-17 boys’ 3,000m.

On his track debut at under-17 level, the Tavistock Run Project athlete beat all age groups to win in 9:05.67.

His Mount Kelly College team-mate Tom Brew, competing for Tavistock, was second under-20 in the same event in 10:00.27, while Jennifer Sabine was first senior and third overall in the women’s race in 11.33 minutes.

As well as Smart, Bee and King there were plenty of other eye-catching performances from athletes.

City of Plymouth’s Jade Simson won the women’s long jump with 5.67m. She has leaped 5.93m this season, which puts her in the UK’s top 20.

Club colleague Matt Sumner eased to victory in the men’s 400m hurdles in 56.11 seconds, while Tavistock’s Joely Bytheway won the women’s under-20 version in 68.05, as well as also winning the 100m hurdles.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Nathan Brown won the senior men’s and under-20 400 and 800m races. He clocked 51.72 for the one lap event and 1:58.41 for the two lap race, where Plymouth’s Dean Smith took second in 1:59.05.

Plymouth’s Mali Heard claimed a medal of every colour in the under-13 girls’ age group. She won the 200m in a PB time of 27.39, took silver in the long jump with 4.30m and bronze in the 100m with 13.84 seconds.

In the 100m, Heard’s club team-mate Nubia Evans-Shield took silver in 13.84 seconds. Evans-Shield won the under-13 girls’ discus in 26.92m and also picked up a silver in the shot with 7.77m to also claim three medals.

Tavistock’s Ben Pitts won the under-15 boys’ long jump with a PB and championship record of 5.98m. He also set PBs to take silver medals in the 100m and 200m with times of 12.10 and 24.07 seconds.

His Tavistock team-mate Jamie Bulbring also ran a PB in the under-15 girls’ 200m of 26.50 seconds to take second. She also won silver in the 100m with 13.02 seconds.

Erme Valley’s Bronwyn Harris won the under-15 discus with 19.07m and came second in the shot with 8.62m, while she claimed a PB of 1.50m to finish fourth in the high jump. Her club colleague Ella Isaias took bronze the high jump with a PB of 1.55.

Fellow Erme Valley high jumper William Bedford took second in the under-20 event with 1.70m, while Tavistock’s Nicolas Maczugowski came second in the under-13 boys’ high jump with a PB of 1.35m. He also came third in the under-13 75m hurdles with a PB of 14.65 seconds and won the shot with another PB and championship record of 7.12m.

Tavistock’s Ben Rogers impressed in the field events at under-20 level. He won the hammer with a PB of 28.94m and the triple jump with 11.41m leap and also came second in the discus, shot and long jump events.

Club colleague Emma Ryder won the women’s and under-20 800m in 2:17.02 minutes. She was also second in the under-20 1,500m in 5:00.47.

Fellow Tavistock athlete Natasha Farrington was first under-17 in the 1,500m in 4:59.85, with colleague Amelia Riggott winning the under-15 event in 5:08.35, where Krystyna Cade was third in 5:25.75.

Tavistock Run Project’s Edward Smart was first under-20 in the 1,500m in 4:38.24, while Plymouth’s Verity Tank was third over the same distance at under-13 girls’ race in 5:29.74.

In the 800m, Plymouth’s Oliver Woodmason came second in the under-15 category in a PB time of 2:14.61, while Tavistock’s Jenny Milburn was third in the under-17 800m in 2:24.31.

Tavistock Run Project’s Sam Lake won the women’s 5,000m in 19:38.80, while City of Plymouth’s Matthew Bradley was second in the men’s 2000m steeplechase in 6:36.26.

There was a gold medal for Plymouth’s Hayley Harvey in the women’s 200m. She clocked 26.88, while colleague Emily Frost took third in the under-17 100m in 13.24.

Tavistock’s Jade Kinsey won the women’s under-20 400m in 59.52 seconds, while Plymouth’s Emily Ginter won a silver in the under-13 girls’ 70m hurdles and a bronze in the javelin, while her team-mate Libby Fitzgerald took silver in the same javelin event and a bronze in the shot.

Plymouth’s Lili Fern took second in the under-15 girls’ 75m hurdles in 13.03, with Erme Valley’s Estelle Hodges third in the under-17 girls’ 80m hurdles in a PB time of 12.47 seconds.

There was a gold medal for Plymouth’s Toby Clayden in the under-17 long jump. He leaped a PB of 5.73m. Erme Valley’s Adam Dingley took silver in the under-13 long jump with 4.18m, while Plymouth’s Noah Jones took the under-14 pole vault title with 2.60m.

Erme Valley took first and second in the under-15 triple jump through Matthew Newton and Josiah Mason.

Tavistock’’s Emily Lumley won the under-17 girls’ discus with a PB of 20.92m, while Plymouth’s Kayleigh Weston second with a PB 19.41m.

Lois Fileman, of Tavistock, went home with the silver medal in the under-20 women’s discus (22.53m) and hammer (37.27m).

There were some good hammer performances at Exeter. Edward Fileman came second in the under-17 event with 47.36m, while Kayleigh Weston, of City of Plymouth, claimed a PB of 39.67m to win the under-17 girls’ event, with Tavistock’s Hannah Gellatly taking second. Plymouth’s Dade Weston won the men’s hammer event and also took medals in the shot and discus.

Erme Valley’s Paige Johnson claimed a PB of 22.79m to take silver in the under-15 javelin, while team-mate Angus Harris also threw a PB of 27.51m to finish second in the under-13 boys’ event.
