Plymouth’s Bee makes stunning start to 2018 with hurdles victory in Cardiff

CITY of Plymouth’s Emily Bee opened her year in style at the South West Age Group Indoor Championships in Cardiff.

Bee got 2018 off to a flying start by going straight to the top of the early UK under-17 60m hurdles rankings with victory in Wales.

She clocked a stunning time of 8.57 seconds, which puts her 11^th on the country’s all-time list for that event.

As well as winning gold in the hurdles, she also took second in the 60m flat with a time of 7.90 seconds and claimed a bronze in the long jump with a leap of 5.25m.

There were also South West titles in Cardiff for her City of Plymouth team-mates Poppy Northcott, Jed Hutchings and Noah Jones.

Northcott, competing at under-13 level, set a new PB to win the 800m crown in a time of 2:36.35.

Hutchings made it a double for Plymouth in the under-13 800m by winning the South West boys’ title in 2:29.46.

Jones, meanwhile, took the South West under-15 pole vault crown with a best jump of 2.62m, which was a good start to the year for him.

Tavistock’s Nicolas Maczugowski picked up three bronze medals at the weekend. He took third in the boys’ under-13 60m in 9.02 seconds and also made the podium in the long jump with a best of 4.14m and in the 800m with a PB time of 2:43.72.

Also among the medals were City of Plymouth’s Henry Curtis and Oliver Woodmason and Erme Valley’s Adam Dingley.

Curtis took bronze in the under-15 boys’ 60m hurdles in 9.54 seconds, Woodmason was third in the under-15 800m in 2:24.69, while Dingley also picked up a bronze in the under-13 boys’ 60m hurdles in a time of 11.58 seconds.

Meanwhile, there was also indoor success at the weekend for Tamar Trotters’ Mike Wilsmore.

He clocked victory in the men’s 1,500m A race at the BMC Sheffield Open Meet with a time of 3:49.46.
