Sprint specialist Proud claims second gold on final day of Japan Open

PLYMOUTH Leander’s Ben Proud claimed a second gold medal on the final day of the Japan Open.

Proud won the 50m butterfly final on Saturday and he followed that up with victory in the 50m freestyle on Sunday.

The Olympic finalist and double Commonwealth Games champion clocked 21.89 seconds in the ‘splash and dash’ to finish ahead of Japanese athletes Shioura Shinri, who took silver in 22.18, and Nakamura Katsumi, who was third in 22.19.

After the freestyle final, Proud said: “I’m really happy with that performance. It was great to race against such fast guys, it pushed me on to the wall.

“It’s been a great competition for me against a very talented field. To come out on top in such heavy training shows I’m going in the right direction.”

British Swimming had taken a whole team to Japan following a training camp in Thailand.

They are preparing for this summer’s World Championships in Budapest.
